RestorationProgramme noteThe green light in Vertigo, and how we got it back
What the 1996 restoration recovered, and why the colour matters more than the plot.
Every print of Vertigo that circulated between 1958 and the early nineties had drifted. The Technicolor separations were intact, but nobody had gone back to them.
Madeleine steps out of green light three times in the film. On a faded print you register it as fog. Restored, it reads as what Hitchcock meant: she is arriving from somewhere else.
